Here’s your weekly roundup of the biggest search engine news, ensuring your SEO strategy stays ahead of the competition. Welcome to week 37.
This week brought insights on ranking updates, new developments in Google’s Core Web Vitals support, and an update to API documentation. Here is an overview.
Google provided guidance this week regarding the recent ranking update, explaining that they are continually refining their algorithm to prioritize high-quality content, particularly from smaller or independent domains.
Publishers who haven’t seen an improvement in their rankings are encouraged to keep producing valuable content as Google’s systems continue to evolve.
Google’s Danny Sullivan warned against making radical changes to content in hopes of boosting rankings, especially if the content is already performing well.
While feedback from publishers is reviewed by Google’s engineers, it doesn’t directly influence individual rankings.
Google Chrome has officially dropped support for the First Input Delay (FID) metric, shifting to the more comprehensive Interaction to Next Paint (INP) metric.
INP offers a more holistic approach to measuring interaction responsiveness, tracking the entire process from user input to visual updates.
This change affects various tools, including PageSpeed Insights and web-vitals.js, which will no longer report FID.
Developers are encouraged to optimize for INP, and Google has provided updated documentation to assist with the transition.
Google’s John Mueller offered advice on interpreting traffic fluctuations, noting that small numbers can cause what appear to be large spikes or drops that may not require concern.
For domains with low traffic, even a few clicks can create significant-looking changes on a graph.
John Mueller recommended focusing on long-term trends rather than day-to-day shifts and emphasized that small fluctuations are normal.
He highlighted the importance of keeping perspective and avoiding panic over minor variations, especially for smaller websites.
Google updated its Indexing API documentation, adding a warning regarding spam detection.
The warning indicates that misuse of the API, such as exceeding usage limits or using multiple accounts, could result in access being revoked.
The Indexing API is intended for job listings and live-streamed videos, and Google encourages users to follow its guidelines and use sitemaps alongside the API rather than relying solely on it for faster indexing.
This update underscores Google’s efforts to prevent misuse of its indexing tools.
Week 37 brought with it a key update to Indexing API documentation, but mostly delivered advice on managing traffic fluctuations.
The main message was that businesses should first analyze their traffic trends based on ranking updates before making decisions about adjusting their strategy.
It’s clear that Google’s updates continue to focus on content quality, but you should be cautious about making widespread changes to content that is already performing well.
Finally, with Google Chrome officially dropping FID support, we can now fully shift our focus to Interaction to Next Paint (INP) for SEO purposes.
