Technical SEO decides whether search engines and AI crawlers can find, read and understand your site. Get the overview, from crawling and rendering to structured data.

SEO rests on three pillars: technique, content and links. Technical SEO is the foundation under the other two, the discipline that decides whether the machines can find, read and understand your site at all. There are no shortcuts here. A site with a weak technical foundation cannot rank its way out of the problem with excellent content or strong links alone.

The foundation has also grown broader. It is no longer only Googlebot that has to be able to read your site. The crawlers behind ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and AI Overviews do too, and several of them are considerably less forgiving. Good technical work therefore pays twice: the same clean foundation carries your visibility in classic search and in AI search.

The need is bigger than most teams expect. In over 90% of the websites we analyze, we find technical errors with a direct bearing on visibility. That is rarely a sign of sloppiness. Technique decays quietly as a site grows, changes platform and picks up new templates and features. It also means technical optimization is often where the nearest wins are: errors you can find and fix this week, while new content and new links are still on their way.

What is technical SEO?

Technical SEO is the work of setting up your site's technical foundation so that its potential visibility is actually available to be won. Where content work is about what the pages say, technique is about everything around that. Can the machines find the pages, how fast do they load, is the structure logical, and is the code readable.

Done well, it creates the conditions for your pages to be crawled and indexed the way you intended, and therefore for them to rank at all. Visitors feel it immediately too. A fast, well-structured site is a pleasant site to use, and that experience is exactly what Google measures through Core Web Vitals.

The list of classic errors is long

The same problems turn up across industries and platforms. The most common ones we meet:

  • Poor taxonomy – no clear hierarchy, so neither users nor crawlers can work out the structure.
  • Slow pages – long load times and unstable rendering, costing both rankings and conversions.
  • Hreflang errors – language versions pointing at each other incorrectly, so Google serves the wrong version in the wrong country.
  • Dead pages – 404s that waste link value and your visitors' patience.
  • Duplicate pages with no canonical – the same content on several URLs, without telling the machines which one counts.
  • Missing titles and meta descriptions – pages that never state what they are about, and get presented at random in the results as a result.
  • Wasted crawl budget – crawlers spending their time on filters, parameters and thin pages instead of the content meant to rank.

And the list goes on: redirect chains, blocked resources, JavaScript that hides the content from crawlers, structured data with validation errors. None of it is exotic, and almost all of it can be fixed once you know it is there.

The technical analysis comes first

That is why every technical SEO project starts in the same place, with a thorough analysis of how the site is built. The analysis works through taxonomy, speed, indexing status, redirects, metadata and a long list of other checks systematically, so you can prioritize by effect rather than by hunch. Without that picture you risk spending months on details while the error actually holding your visibility back sits untouched.

It is not a one-off exercise either. A living site changes every week, with new pages, new templates and new integrations, and every change can introduce a new fault. Repeat the analysis on a rhythm and the faults get caught almost before they cost you anything. That is what the site health work looks like in practice: a maintained foundation rather than an annual spring clean.

Technical SEO rarely wins rankings on its own. The other two pillars cannot win without it. The strongest content does not rank if the page never gets indexed, and the best links lose their value pointing at slow or dead pages. A clean technical foundation lifts everything built on top of it.

So treat the three as one system, and prioritize technical work by where it releases the most value in your content and your link profile. Never as an isolated hunt for a perfect health score.
