Search Engines & Search Behavior
Crawling, indexing and ranking explained, what search intent actually means, and how search behavior shifts in real time across Google and the AI surfaces.
All SEO work stands on two things: an understanding of how search engines operate, and an understanding of why people search at all. The mechanics can be learned. The behavior can be read. Together they tell you where to put your effort.
A search engine does three things
The engine never rests. Around the clock it finds, interprets and evaluates pages from across the web, and that process breaks into three steps.
- Crawling. Search robots follow links between pages and fetch the content. The algorithms decide which pages get visited, how many of them and how often. Over time the robots build a map of how the web hangs together.
- Indexing. The content gets analyzed and stored in an enormous index, the engine's library of the web. This is where it is settled what a page is about, and therefore which searches it can be relevant for at all.
- Ranking. On every search, the algorithm sorts the indexed pages by which of them best answers that particular question. Google uses more than 200 signals, and most of them come down to relevance, quality and authority.
Your job is to make all three steps easy: a page that is simple to crawl, unambiguous to understand, and strong enough professionally to deserve the top. A page that cannot be found does not get indexed, and a page outside the index cannot rank on anything. How you steer that step in practice is covered under crawling and indexing.
Three things make the crawler's job easier, and they are worth checking first: a logical hierarchy running from domain to category to subpage, internal links on every page so the robots can move around, and an XML sitemap that stays current as new content goes live.
Search today: several surfaces, one dynamic
Google still handles the large majority of search traffic in most markets, which is why it remains the reference point in most SEO work. But search is no longer a single engine. People ask ChatGPT for advice before a purchase, get the answer straight from AI Overviews without clicking, and use Copilot or Perplexity as a research tool.
The new surfaces do not change the dynamic. People are still looking for answers and for suppliers, and the language models take their sources from the same web Google ranks. The foundation you build for classic search is therefore also the entry ticket to AI search. Nor should you write off the alternative search engines: Bing carries a small but loyal share of the market, and it is also the index Microsoft Copilot reads from.
Four types of search intent
Behind every search sits an intention, and it decides what kind of content can rank. Keywords are what gets typed. Search intent is what is meant.
- Navigational. The user wants to get to a specific place ("hsbc online banking").
- Informational. The user wants to understand something ("what is hreflang").
- Commercial investigation. The user is comparing before a decision ("best accounting software").
- Transactional. The user is ready to act ("buy running shoes men").
The results page gives the intention away. If Google shows guides, guides win. If it shows category pages, category pages win. Reading the SERP before you produce anything is the cheapest analysis in SEO, and the only answer key reality hands you. Tools like Ahrefs and Semrush classify intent algorithmically and work well as support, but the results page decides.
The consequence is practical. If you run a shoe store, your category page will not rank on "how to tie running shoes", however many times the words appear on it. Content has to meet the intention, not just the term.
Search behavior moves with reality
Search data is demand data in real time, and that property is what makes it useful far outside the marketing department. Few things show it as clearly as what happened in Scandinavia in spring 2025. As the trade conflict between the US and Europe sharpened, the reaction was legible directly in the search volumes: in March 2025 we measured 2,175 monthly searches for "boykot USA" in Denmark and 3,381 for "bojkotta USA" in Sweden, up from almost nothing a few months earlier.
The behavior carried through into what people bought. Searches for the Danish soft drink Jolly Cola rose +1,550% in a year, from 1,711 to 28,227 a month. Swedes searched +33% more for Marabou, Norwegians +42% more for Freia.
Cola and chocolate are not the lesson. The lesson is that your market tells you what it wants while it is happening, provided somebody is reading the search data. Companies watching the search development in their own category spot the shift in demand quarters before it turns up in the accounts.
The same mechanic runs underneath ordinary results. What you get back depends on where you are and what you have searched for before, and around elections, price debates or sudden events a results page can change character within hours, because the algorithms recognize that the question has become topical.
What to take with you
- Build for the intention, not for the keyword. The same keyword can change intent over time, and the content has to follow it.
- Think in surfaces instead of one search engine. Visibility has to be measured where your customers actually search, in classic results and in AI answers, with equal weight on both.
- Use search data as market insight. Seasonality, new needs and shifts in demand show up in the search volumes first.
