Google Trends
Google Trends is a free Google tool that shows how interest in a search term develops over time. The curve runs from 0 to 100, where 100 marks the point at which the term was most popular within the selected period. The numbers are relative: they say nothing about how many people search, only how the interest moves.
That makes the tool strongest on movement. Several terms can be compared against each other, filtered by country, region and timeframe, and related queries show what is climbing. When a related query rises sharply, Google labels it a breakout, and that label is often where the interesting discoveries sit.
Three uses account for most of the value. Seasonality: the curve shows exactly when interest in garden furniture or ski holidays peaks. Wording: when two terms describe the same thing, Trends shows which one people actually use and how the split shifts over the years. And emerging topics: keyword tools built on historical averages lag behind by definition, while Trends shows the movement as it happens.
The limitation is built in. Without absolute numbers, Trends cannot carry a decision on its own in SEO, because a curve can climb steeply from almost nothing. It works as a supplement to the analysis of volume and competition on specific keywords, and that analysis belongs to the guide on keyword research.
