Video Carousel

A video carousel is a feature in the SERP where Google shows a horizontal row of video results the user can scroll through on the results page itself. Each video appears with a thumbnail, title, channel and duration, and the carousel often sits high on the page, above several of the classic organic results.

It appears when Google's algorithm judges a query to carry video intent. That covers how-to queries, reviews and recipes, where people would rather watch the solution than read it. Most of the content comes from YouTube in practice, but Google also pulls videos from companies' own pages when the technical groundwork is there: an indexable video page, video markup in structured data, and a thumbnail Google can display.

What decides the placements

Which keywords trigger a carousel is information in itself: Google has shown that the expected format for that query is video, and a well-made clip can reach a page-one visibility there that text pages may need years to earn. The algorithm matches the video's title, description and chapters against the language of the query, and chapters also let Google surface key moments, jumping straight to the relevant point in the video.

Video has become part of the multimodal search picture as well. Google's AI Overviews cut video content into their answers, so a considered video effort strengthens SEO on several surfaces at once. Video as a format is handled in its own guide, video optimization.
