YMYL
YMYL stands for Your Money or Your Life and is Google's term for topics that can affect a person's health, finances, safety or quality of life. The concept comes from Google's Search Quality Rater Guidelines, the handbook for the people who evaluate the quality of search results, and it covers areas such as health and medicine, personal finance, investment, insurance, law and significant news.
The logic is straightforward. A poor answer to "best running shoes for beginners" costs a reader sore feet at worst. A poor answer to "symptoms of a blood clot" or "how to invest your pension" can do a person real harm. Google therefore sets the bar markedly higher for YMYL content and weighs E-E-A-T more heavily here than anywhere else: the publisher has to be able to document experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness.
What that means for the content
In banking, insurance, health and law, the expectations for SEO content sit above the average: named authors with real qualifications, professional review of the material, sources behind the claims and a clearly identified publisher. Anonymous content without sources can rank in many industries, though rarely on YMYL topics.
The reward scales with the bar. Companies that clear it reach a visibility thin content never touches, and AI search pulls the same way: ChatGPT and Google's AI Overviews are extra cautious with health and finance questions and lean consistently on sources with documented authority.
