Webmaster Guidelines

Webmaster Guidelines is the classic collective term for the guidance search engines publish for website owners and developers. The guidelines describe what a search engine requires in order to find, index and display a site, and where the line runs between legitimate optimization and manipulation. Google's version carried the name Google Webmaster Guidelines for many years, but was renamed Google Search Essentials in 2022, and Google's specific rule set is covered in the entry on Google Webmaster Guidelines.

The content usually falls into three tracks: the technical requirements, where the search engine's robot must be able to crawl and index the pages; the spam policies on hidden text, bought links, cloaking and other attempts to trick the algorithm, which can cost rankings or bring a manual action; and the recommendations about content that helps people rather than chasing the algorithm. Bing maintains an equivalent set in its own Webmaster Guidelines, and the lines are similar enough that good work rarely needs adapting per search engine.

The guidelines are more than formalities. They define the rules of play for all serious SEO: white hat work stays inside them, black hat breaks them deliberately. That line has also become the industry's yardstick, since a promise of shortcuts around the guidelines is the classic marker of work that eventually costs visibility. The cross-engine overview sits in the guide to search engine guidelines.
