KPI

KPI stands for Key Performance Indicator: a measurable value that shows whether a defined goal is being reached. KPIs translate strategy into numbers, so progress can be read while the work is running instead of judged when it is over.

A sound KPI has three traits. It ties to a business goal rather than to activity. It can be counted continuously, which leaves room to react along the way. And it has an owner and a measurement point, for example "organic traffic to the product pages grows 20% this year". The quantity is a signal in itself: ten KPIs on a dashboard usually means none of them steers anything.

In SEO the common KPIs run from rankings and visibility through organic traffic to conversions and revenue from search. The first are leading indicators that move quickly, the last show the real business effect with a delay, and a healthy setup follows both layers. AI search widened the set: when part of the buyer's research happens in ChatGPT, Copilot and AI Overviews, how often a brand appears in those answers sits alongside the classic numbers from GA4 and Search Console.

The recurring trap is measuring what is easy instead of what matters. Impressions and average position work as diagnostics, while the strongest KPIs sit close to the business: leads, revenue and conversion rate from organic traffic. Choosing them belongs to the guide on SEO KPIs.
