Organic Traffic

Organic traffic is the visitors who find a website through the unpaid search results in Google and other search engines. The word organic separates them from visitors who arrive via ads, type the address directly, click from social media or follow a link from another website. In analytics the source appears as "Organic Search".

The difference between organic and paid traffic lies in the economics over time. Ad traffic stops the moment the budget does. Organic traffic builds on itself: a page that ranks well can bring visitors home month after month with no price per click, and every new strong page makes the whole domain a little heavier. That mechanic is what makes SEO an investment rather than an expense, and the reason organic search ranks among the largest and most profitable channels in most industries.

The quality is high at the same time. An organic visitor has formulated a need and chosen the page as the answer, so relevance is built into the click from the start.

Search has also gained more surfaces, and that shows up in the numbers. Referrals from ChatGPT, Copilot and Perplexity now appear in GA4, and Google's AI Overviews change which queries produce clicks at all. Clicks from the AI surfaces are fewer, though well qualified. The guide to search analytics and reporting covers how the picture is measured across surfaces.
