Conversion
A conversion is an action on your website that carries direct business value: a purchase, a completed contact form, a booking or a phone call. It is the point where a visitor becomes a customer or a lead, and therefore the measure every traffic number is ultimately held up against.
What counts as a conversion follows from the business model. A webshop measures purchases, a B2B company usually measures form submissions and booked meetings, a publisher may count newsletter signups. Most setups separate two levels:
- Primary conversions are the actions with direct commercial value: purchases, forms, calls and steps in a checkout flow.
- Secondary conversions are engagement signals on the way there, such as time on page, scroll depth, downloads or visits to the pricing page.
Secondary conversions are not goals in themselves, but they show whether content moves people in the right direction long before the primary conversion happens. In GA4 the actions that matter commercially are marked as key events.
For SEO, conversions are the joint between visibility and revenue. Rankings and traffic are means; the interesting question is how many visitors act, and which pages and keywords bring them there. The share of visitors who convert is the conversion rate, which has its own entry. The guide to CRO in content deals with content built to carry visitors toward the action.
