Technical SEO

Technical SEO is the optimization of a website's technical foundation, so search engines can crawl, understand and index its pages without friction. The discipline covers everything from page speed and Core Web Vitals to site structure, redirects, canonical tags, sitemaps and robots.txt. Without a healthy foundation, even the best content never gets the visibility it deserves.

The mechanics

A search engine has to complete three steps before a page can rank: find it, read it, and store it in the index. Technical SEO removes the obstacles along that path. It can be redirect chains wasting crawl budget, JavaScript hiding content from the crawler, duplicate pages without a canonical, or a mobile experience that loads too slowly. None of it is obvious when clicking around the site, and all of it affects rankings.

The discipline differs from content work by dealing with the frame around the content: code, server, structure and the signals that steer crawler behavior. A page can be excellent on substance and still be invisible if the frame gets in the way. AI search has only made the foundation more valuable, because the crawlers behind ChatGPT and Perplexity are less patient than Googlebot and give up on content that needs heavy JavaScript rendering.

For large sites, technical SEO is often where the fastest gains sit: removing one technical blocker can lift entire sections of a site at once. The guide to technical SEO works through the discipline in order of impact.
