PBN (Private Blog Network)
PBN stands for Private Blog Network: a network of websites controlled by one operator, existing first and foremost to send backlinks to the pages that operator wants to rank. The technique belongs to black hat SEO, because it manufactures authority instead of earning it.
The operator typically buys expired domains that still carry authority from their previous life and fills them with thin content. Seen from outside, the sites look like independent blogs. In reality they all point at the same target pages, and the links are often sold as a shortcut to fast rankings.
PBN links violate Google's link spam policy, and the consequence arrives by one of two routes. Either Google's spam systems detect the pattern and neutralize the value of the links, so the investment evaporates. Or a reviewer at Google steps in with a manual action, which can cost a site large parts of its visibility in search. The trade is lopsided: a short-term gain against the risk of losing rankings that took years to build.
Conceptually the PBN is the pure opposite of earned authority: links from real media and trade publications, content others reference of their own accord, and digital PR that creates genuine mentions. In a PBN the operator points at their own pages, while earned authority has independent senders putting their name to it, which is why those signals survive algorithm updates. AI search engines follow the same logic, and a network no real person reads leaves no trace.
